How To Troubleshoot A Tamping Rammer
How To Troubleshoot A Tamping Rammer: A Complete Guide
Tomahawk Vibratory Rammers are designed for tough worksite conditions. While easy to operate, these rammers provide excellent maneuverability in confined areas including trench work, backfill, and asphalt repair work.
If you are experiencing trouble with your rammer, take a look at the following guide for easy fixes:

Why isn’t my rammer starting?

  • Ensure the operator has completed the starting procedures found in the Operations Manual correctly.
  • Oil and Gas: Use 91 Octane oil and clean SAE 10W-30 Fuel.
  • The spark plug misfires: Clean up the spark plug and/or replace it in case that it looks worn.
  • Handles: If the machine handles are not tilted, it may cause low fuel. Adjust the handles properly.

  • Check the engine switch: If the switch is set to “OFF”, switch it to “ON”.
  • Fuel valve: If the fuel valve is turned “OFF”, then turn to the “ON” position.
  • Fix choke: If the choke is open, we recommend closing the choke.

Why is my rammer suddenly stopping or bogging down?

  • Ensure the operator has completed the starting procedures found in the Operations Manual correctly.
  • Check the engine switch: If the switch is set to “OFF”, switch it to “ON”.
  • Fuel valve: If the fuel valve is turned “OFF”, then turn to the “ON” position.
  • Fix choke: If the choke is open, we recommend closing the choke.
  • Air Filter: Check the air filter for any dust clogging. This can reduce engine performance. Clean or replace if needed.
  • Oil and Gas: Use 91 Octane oil and clean SAE 10W-30 Fuel.
  • Clean or change your carburetor: Use carb cleaner to clean debris effectively. Also consider using a micro-sonic cleaner (jewelry cleaner) to effective clean all gunk or build up on the inside of the carburetor.

The rammer engine is running, but not compacting

  • The connecting rod or crank gear can be broken. Check and replace if needed.
  • Check the clutch: Inspect, clean, and/or replace if needed.
