Proper maintenance ensures your Tomahawk backpack sprayer continues to perform efficiently and avoids common issues like clogs or pump failure. Follow these steps after every use for optimal results.

Maintenance Summary

Task How Often
Flush after use Every use
Check for debris When performance drops
Clean/inspect strainer Weekly or as needed
Check & refill oil Monthly or per hours used

Step 1: Flush Chemicals After Each Use

  1. After spraying, tilt the sprayer and properly drain any remaining chemical.

Dispose of according to the chemical manufacturer’s instructions.

  2. Fill the tank with clean water or a cleaning solution.

  3. Run the pump, allowing the water to flow through the tubing and out of the hose.

  4. Do NOT attach a nozzle or wand—you want full water flow to flush out residues.

This prevents crystallized chemicals from solidifying inside the pump.

Step 2: Remove Debris from the Pump

  1. Run the pump with clean water.
  2. Loosen the bolts or Allen screws on both the intake and discharge sides of the pump.
  3. Let the pump continue running—the pressure may push debris out through the open ends.
  4. Re-tighten the bolts after water flows smoothly and debris is cleared.

This step is essential if your pump seems weak or uneven in output.

Step 3: Check and Maintain the Strainer

  1. Locate the strainer in your pump (most units include one by default).
  2. Inspect it regularly for buildup, damage, or clogs.
  3. Clean or replace the strainer as needed to prevent debris from reaching the pump.

A functioning strainer reduces the risk of internal clogging.

Step 4: Refill Pump Oil if Needed

  1. Check the oil level—it should be about half full when the unit is level.
  2. If low, unscrew the top bolt on the pump housing.
  3. Add general-purpose pump oil (check your user manual for specifics).
  4. Avoid overfilling—too much oil can reduce pump efficiency.

Regular lubrication keeps your pump running smoothly over time.
